Another wagashi post.
This time, it's the Gozen Guri by Minamoto Kitchoan.
Guri, or Kuri - is chestnut.
The reason we find so many chestnut food and chestnut deserts these days because it's autumn - chestnut season.
So why not try this Gozen Guri Wagashi. $7.50 SGD per piece.

They also have a beautiful website introducing the product here. (Not ads)
Let's get right into it.
Nice looking package.
I'd say it's pretty well suited for gifts in that sense.
Looks like this from the front
And the information below.
I'm guessing the shelf life might be about a month.
Let's open the package.
Interesting.
It has these small rice-sized particles covering the cake.
According to the website, these small particles are 'chestnut sprinkles'.
Split open, the piece looks like this.
Not the best splitting job - but it must do.
In the middle is the chestnut. The layer right around the chestnut is white bean paste. Outer layer is a soft mochi cake layer, and around that are the chestnut sprinkles.
The chestnut in the middle gives it a nice gentle marron taste inside the sweetness of the mochi.
The mochi-textured layer around it is very much on the sweet side. It takes over the taste of the whole wagashi. Although the taste focuses on the sweet part, the taste of the marron is quite obvious. Interesting balance.
I accidently had this with Houjicha - but that definitely was a mistake. Something with more 'umpfh' to neutralize the sweetness would have been better.
A sencha or a gyokuro would definitely work.
Matcha? Yup, I think it'll be a good option for matcha too.
So yea, it works.
I think it works with Matcha. The think about drinking Matcha on a regular basis, is it's good to have a repertoire sweets to go to. It's also nice that it's a seasonal thing. Works as a guest snack, something to chat about.
Guru Rating
for the Wagashi 7.2/10.0
Might pick it up again eventually when I run out of options or get bored of the usual. It's a plus that is has a seasonality to it.
Would I recommend someone this wagashi? Well, I wouldn't object against it. I just feel there's better options to go for first.
