Mame Daifuku at Minamoto Kitchoan inside Takashimaya

Updated: Nov 6, 2021

So this is a Wagashi review.

The Mame-Daifuku by Minamoto Kitchoan.

$3.20 SGD per piece.

The one and only - Mame-Daifuku. Perhaps one of the most basic types of Wagashi.

Basic, but solid.

Inside will have anko (sweet red bean paste).

It will be covered by mochi. You can see the black peas mixed in the layer of mochi from the outside.

By the way, Minamoto Kitchoan is a wagashi shop I used to go quite often when I was living in Japan as well. They'd usually have an outlet wherever I would stay. (I'd been hopping around different parts of Japan for a while.)

It's a useful shop for any wagashi gifts. Happy to see this in Singapore.

Let's get right into it.

Looks nice.

Standard Mochi-daifuku.

The mochi looks nice and soft. You can almost see the darkness of the red bean paste through the white mochi coating. It suggests that the filling-to-mochi ratio is good.

Expires quite quick... 3 days.

Better eat fast.

The taste is really nice. Solid.

Just as expected - soft mochi. Good balance of mochi-to-anko (red bean paste). Not too sweet, which is good.

Fantastic mochi texture.

Just the right amount of salt.

The great thing about this is that it pairs well with any Japanese tea.

Today I had this with Houjicha. (Kaga-boucha to be exact)

For sweeter wagashi, you'd want a little more than Houjicha. Sencha or Matcha is nice.

But the great thing about this Mochi-daifuku is that it's a light tasting desert.

Although aoujicha is light, a good quality houjicha pairs perfectly as well.

Anyways,

Really good Mochi-Daifuku.

For $3.20 SGD per piece? It's a good quick gift option for me.

Guru Rating

for the Mochi-Daifuku 9.0/10

It's delicious. This'll be my go-to Mochi-Daifuku place in SG for me right now. This will be the one I'll recommend if I'm asked.

as a Wagashi 8.2 / 10

Yes I'd recommend this as a wagashi also. Nothing fancy, nothing new, but a solid choice. It's one of the top choices for myself if I'm eating alone.

A seasonal wagashi will give you a little more to talk about or be surprised about if you're looking for something to accompany your tea with somebody. But if you don't mind that, this is a great wagashi to go for.
