Hurray, "MISUDO" has come to Singapore!
The famous Japanese Donut chain, Mister Donut, had opened a pop-up shop in Jurong point. I didn't know about this until I saw the insane line while walking past Japan street in the mall.
This news is music to my ears, as I truly dig the "Pon de ring"! I won't "rate" the donut in this post, but I'll do a quick review.
Mister Donut pop-up shop (Temporary - for a month from July 15th, 2022)
63 Jurong West Central 3, #B1-78A, Jurong Point Shopping Centre, Singapore 648886
First of all, some quick facts about Mister Donut. Its roots started in the United States but eventually broke apart, and Duskin (a company in Osaka, Japan) owns its Japanese operations. However, the taste and positioning were significantly adjusted to cater to the Japanese market. In a sense, you can say that it's a "Japanese donut."
Perhaps their most famous product is called the "Pon De Ring." It's a donut with a unique mochi texture developed and launched in 2003. It's a donut with eight circular balls connected to form a ring. It looks a little like the "Pao de Queijo" from Brazil, which this product was named after.
The "Pon De Ring" has been a huge hit ever since its launch and was the driving force of the financial turnaround the company was able to make.
Now, back to the pop-up shop.
The queue is insane.
I heard someone waiting for four hours in the queue. I saw a social media post mentioning they were in the line for five hours!! There goes your entire day!!
There are some rules to purchasing as well.
Limited to only ten donuts per person.
Although no signboard mentions this, limited to only four "Pon-de-rings" per person.
You can see the prices in the picture below.
Each donut is between 2.30 and 2.50 SGD.
There are also set deals.
6 for 13.50
10 for 22.00
I was lucky to have a partner who queued for two hours and passed me a "Pon-de-ring" to try. Thank you so much!
So here is how it looks.
I love it. It tastes just as I remember from Japan.
There's that crunchiness on the outside and the incredible mochi-mochi texture on the inside. It fills my face with a smile.
I also like how it feels light and healthy as a donut.
It's something you should try as well. It's a high recommendation for any donut lovers.
Now, as a side note, there's a "Dunkin' Donuts" on the first floor of Jurong Point. Dunkin' Donuts and Mister Donut have some history - as there was a point when they were under one company. Right now, they're purely competitors.
I couldn't ignore this attempt by Dunkin' Donuts to mimic the Pon de Ring. They call it the "Mochimochi."
I tried it, but it did not taste like the Pon de Ring. No mochi texture at all! I recommend you wait in the queue to wait for the original Pon de Ring from Mister Donuts.
I hope this pop-up shop experiment helps land a permanent Mister Donut in Singapore.
