Had an appointment today at Tanjong Pagar, so dropped by Imakatsu - which is a Tonkatsu restaurant.
Right above the Tanjong Pagar MRT station on the ground level, with a very nice looking glass restaurant with high ceilings. But as you can see, the English name is so small you almost have to squint from afar.
First time for me at Imakatsu, in which case I'm going to go for their most basic dish.
Yes, the Tonkatsu.

According to their website, they originated from Roppongi in Tokyo. They have two outlets in Singapore, one here and the other being in Buona Vista.
Similar to all Japanese dishes, the Tonkatsu is a very simple dish.
Good meat, good oil, good sauce, good rice.
I've also conducted a review for Imakatsu's "Miso Pork Katsu" as well - which I visited on a later date as well. Please take a look for that too!
Let's get right into it.
Imakatsu Tanjong Pagar Lunch Menu
So their lunch set comes with a choice of Katsu, a choice of side dishes, and a choice of soft drink for $29.
In the menu it says "2 side dishes", but you'd probably want to use one of those for the "rice, miso soup and pickles". So what you're really choosing is only one.
Nonetheless, $29 for a Tonkatsu set with an additional side is very reasonable. If I can get a solid Tonkatsu at this price, that would be a huge plus.
Here below are the choices in the menu
The lunch main choices
Premium Pork Katsu - Hokkaido Pork
Miso Pork Katsu - Hokkaido Pork
Unagi Tamagotoji
Cheese Pork Katsu - Hokkaido Pork
Pork Fillet Katsu
Chicken Mix Katsu
It's interesting that the pork fillet katsu doesn't have an indication that it's a Hokkaido pork. I wonder if it's just an error of the menu.
The lunch side choices
rice, miso soup and pickles
Curry Sauce
Kimchi
Oyster Fry 2pcs
Age Gyoza 3pcs (Deep fried gyoza)
Edamame
Chinese spring roll 4pcs
Aji Fry 1pc (Deep fried horse mackerel)
Ebi Karaage (Shrimp Karaage)
Mentaiko
Mochi Cheese 1pc
My order was went for the Premium Pork Katsu. I added a side and went for Kimchi and Oyster Fry.
The free flow cabbage
Is what you'd expect in a Tonkatsu restaurant. Good and fresh. You wouldn't expect more, you wouldn't expect less.
The Kimchi
This was pretty interesting. Kimchi but with negi and nori topped on. It's like a merge of Korean and Japanese.
The actual taste of the Kimchi was nice.
It almost had the taste of a chanjya. A very thick tasting kimchi which I liked.
The oyster fry
Yes so this is one side dish more than what you can order in the set, but I'll share this anyways. Oyster fry.
The taste of the Oyster fry was really nice as well.
Nice and soft. Well fried. Most importantly, not fishy at all.
The premium pork katsu
Nice volume.
The set here is very basic. Rice, miso soup, pickles. Good rice, good miso soup, good pickles.
I like how they have sesame to mix into the sauce. You get the Karashi mustard which is really important too.
The taste was really solid.
It was a very decent quality pork considering the price.
It was soft. It had a good solid taste.
I would think that at this price, this would be one of the most competitive Tonkatsu restaurants in the market. That's the impression I got.
Guru Rating
for the Tonkatsu 8.2/10
The quality of the Tonkatsu falls under that mid-tear range of Tonkatsu restaurants. I'd think It'd be difficult to find a better one for the same price.
I would recommend his restaurant in that sense.
