The Kingyo at Minamoto Kitchoan inside Takashimaya

Updated: Jun 2, 2022

Back at the Japan confectionary Minamoto Kitchoan again.

Maybe a bit out of season already, but I wanted to try the beautiful jelly with the goldfish design. I'd assume this is something for Summer. Usually in Japan, goldfish symbolizes Summer.

Kingyo SGD $6.20 per piece.

A pretty hefty price for a jelly isn't it! Let's see if it's worth it.

Let's get right into it!

I've already taken off the package and put it on the plate.

Inside the clear Jelly, which the moment you open the package, you can smell the thick and juicy flavor of a grape jelly.

There are two red goldfish swimming in the jelly, and one round azuki. There's also a white - I think it's an agar cube - under the goldfish as well.

The goldfish are beautiful.

Let's make it swim!

The Jelly is surprisingly thick.

You'd kind of expect that for more than $6 SGD, you'd better be paying for something of a higher quality. Perhaps a part of it is this thickness to the jelly. It's definitely Jelly - normal jelly. It's just very thick.

The red bean gives a good accent to the texture. It has almost a dry flaky texture within the smooth juiciness of the jelly, which actually balances out very nicely.

The goldfish are like that to perhaps a less of a degree. It also has a bit of a different texture to give you something different from the Jelly. It's almost like the texture of a yokan - but not sure if it's actually a yokan.

It's really good.

However, It's just a jelly. And it's 6 bucks for one jelly.

Guru Rating

as a wagashi - 4.9/10

I wouldn't buy this personally in the future. While it is a delicious jelly, after all it's still a jelly. It's hard to justify the price tag, is my opinion.

The great thing about this desert is actually how it looks. It is a truly beautiful looking sweet which you can enjoy from the external - something you can't really say as much for other sweets. Furthermore, it has the season theme associated to it, so it suits as a gift in that way.

So I can foresee people buying for gifts. But still wouldn't be too high on my recommendation list.
