Tsuya Dorayaki by Minamoto Kitchoan inside Takashimaya

Updated: Jun 2, 2022

If you know Dorayaki, it's probably because you know Doraemon.

Yes, Dorayaki is that round brown bread-like snack that Doraemon's absolutely loves!

Even as a Japanese - that's how I got to know Dorayaki too! Don't get me wrong, Dorayaki is a very common sweet in Japan. It's actually one of the major traditional wagashis.

It's just that Doraemon is so much more of a presence especially for kids growing up.

Anyways,

One thing to note about Dorayakis is that the ones commonly found in supermarkets are really not nice.

A Dorayaki is a simple sweet with not too many components too it. It's just the pancake, and the red bean inside.

Therefore taste of the Dorayaki is completely dependent on the quality of how these two essential parts of the sweet are made.

When these are not high quality, you quickly end up with a fairly unpleasant dish.

So here we go with the "Tsuya" Dorayaki by Minamoto Kitchoan. $3.20 SGD per piece.

Let's get right into it!

If you're used to the supermarket price, you might feel like $3.20 for one dorayaki might be quite expensive. But that's because you're comparing it with terrible ones.

I consider the Dorayaki as one of the most cost effective wagashis out there.

And take a look at this.

At this point already you can anticipate the pancake to be delicious. Just from the color of how it is cooked, and how it's seemingly oozing the moisture of the bread.

Can't wait to try it.

Broken in half.

Excuse my very incapable knife.

But you can see the pancakes stuffed with the red bean paste quite sufficiently.

How is the taste?

It's fantastic.

It's extremely moist throughout the whole piece, no dryness to the pancake or the red bean taste at all.

The delicious baked flavor and smell of the dorayaki pancake is very prominent, which is extremely satisfying as well.

The balance of the red bean paste to the pancake is perfect. Well stuffed, but not too much that now you start to loose the taste of the pancake part. The balanced sweetness makes the match of the red bean paste with the pancake fit extremely well together.

The red bean paste itself is of great quality. Just simply a delicious red bean. Delicious, even just by itself.

Guru Rating

as a Dorayaki 9.2 / 10.0

I'm comfortable to recommend this as a dorayaki every time.

as a Wagashi 8.5 / 10.0

Depends on things like to whom and when, but would be confident to recommend this as a wagashi as well. It's very standard and basic, so that's the reason the score is rather moderate.
